They could potentially be useful, though. However, I've had bad luck with berries in Pearl, if you don't tend to them then they eventually disappear, whereas they didn't in Sapphire.
You can pretty much grow an infinite amount of them, and they restore ten PP each, which is nice. I'm not sure how useful they would be in a speedrun, but I love Leppa Berries. They also have their respective power-boosting moves common to all starters, so people can take advantage of those. It doesn't really get decent water moves until later, but it's steel type, when you get it, makes it hard to hurt. Torterra can absorb (physical) damage pretty easily and hits pretty hard too.
Infernape has great type coverage and can learn Grass Knot, so it can take on Water-types to an extent. While I don't have any recording equipment, I'd figure I might as well toss out some ideas. The latest Pokemon DS RPG thread is several months old, and Platinum is out, so I decided to try and resurrect this series for speedrunning purposes.
